Safety Tips for
Family,
Home and Community
After speaking with police we have a gathered a few
safety reminders to pass on to our residents.
Home
& Community Safety
- Drive by a playground on your way home at night,
if you spot anything suspicious simply call the police
and request a car comes to check it out.
- There has been talk of builders supplies going
missing and damage to newer properties - if you live
in one of these areas that are under construction
be sure to keep watch for suspicious activity and
report anything to the police.
- A reported break-in in Cornell involved a moving truck which emptied the content of a house with a for lease
sign out front - if you have neighbours who are moving find out when their moving day is then keep an eye out
for trucks removing contents on the wrong day, if you are suspicious inform the police.
- Make sure you do not still have builder original
locks on your doors. It is also wise to change
the locks when you move into an existing home.
- Keep your door lights on at night or use motion
sensors.
- Garage lane lights should be operational. Make
sure you check your light bulbs. This is also in
most Cornell home contracts.
- Alarms or dogs can be a deterrent.
- Keep smoke alarms in working order.
- Have a Carbon Monoxide Detector.
- If you are away, ask a neighbour to pick up your
paper and watch the house.
- Report anything suspicious to police
- Know your neighbours and keep a
watch out for their property as well as your own.
Children’s Safety
- Tell children and babysitters to watch out for
strangers when at parks and the splash pad.
- Go over safety rules and what to do in an emergency.
- Leave emergency contact numbers for babysitters
of neighbours who are home during the day.
- Always travel with a buddy.
- Do not let young children go even two doors down
without watching them from the window or door. We
often get too comfortable here in Cornell.
- Keep pools covered when not in use. Even small
ones can be dangerous.
- Report anything suspicious and try to get license
plate numbers.
- Teach your children not to talk to or go anywhere
with strangers.
- Make sure your child knows his or her full name,
address and phone number.
Remember we are the eyes and ears of our community. Let’s
watch out for each other and stay safe.
