Local Schools Update:
Proposed Cornell High School
The site at the corner of Christian Ressor and Bur Oak has been picked up by The Public School Board. There have
been talks of swapping these lands with the Catholic School site directly across from the planned community centre. This
creates the possibility of sharing some of the community centres facilities with the new high school. This Public High
School may be built much sooner than the Catholic High School.
The school board is leaning towards building future High Schools on a smaller scale to facilitate about 1400 student instead of over 2000 (currently at Markham District High). These smaller schools are proving themselves to be better learning environments for students.
Makham District High School Rebuild
MDHS is preparing for a rebuild. To accommodate
this, CVPS students entering Grade 9 will attend the new Bur Oak High School. Bur Oak High School is located about 6
km from Cornell on Bur Oak Avenue, just west of McCowan Road. Both schools will be built to accommodate
1200 – 1400 students.
A recent meeting with CVPS Grade 8 students and their parents revealed that the students are excited about opening a new school and setting the tone. The school will have some great facilities, including two double gyms that can be divided into four to accommodate a weight room, dance facility and more. The program line-up is also promising.
Catholic Elementary School
Development on the Catholic elementary school site (Country Glen Road beside Cornell Village Public School) is still
on hold. The Catholic School Board has found that roughly 150 students from Cornell are enrolled in the Catholic system.
While it's not enough to support the building of a new school, the CRPA has tried to encourage the board to re-evaluate.
If you are a parent who would use a Cornell based Catholic school but are currently not enrolled please contact the
Catholic school board.

The CRPA will do it’s best to secure Cornell’s schools as quickly as possible. Please contact your Trustee
by phone or email to let them know you share these views. We will be asking our Trustees to come out to the CRPA Annual
General Meeting (AGM) in January. Please bring any questions and concerns to this important meeting.
Anytime that you have a problem that relates to the community (not an individual issue) please do not hesitate to contact a board member of the CRPA. Stay tuned to this site for dates and times of our AGM and updates on these School issues.
After more than a year, the Cornell Village Public School has been granted a pilot crossing guard program. In September
the adult crossing guard system at CVPS will be launched.
The process to get our Guard included a number of car and gap studies (that never quite met the required numbers),
followed by numerous emails and phone calls and finally the CRPA and Parents of the School Advisory Committee going to
the town to plead our case.
Many questions and facts were presented that we thought made us different from other areas, such as:
Because we did not meet the required numbers we also presented a new idea – the CRPA would pay half of the cost of a guard for the first year. Our proposal was granted as a pilot program with the understanding that we will be re-assessed next year when the six-pack of portables arrives, increasing the school population dramatically. This is not a guarantee that we will get an adult crossing guard permanently, but it will save us the trouble of starting the long process over again in September.
The CRPA will use funds raised to front the cost of the Adult crossing guard this September, which will total around $2500.00. Please watch for fund raising initiatives coming up to cover this cost. We greatly appreciate any donations towards this cause.
We would like to thank all those who worked hard to get this passed through. It has been a long road and we are glad to get a solution even if it is only temporary. Kudos to those who stuck it out when we thought it was hopeless.
