Cornell VIVA Purple Now Extended to Markham Stouffville Hosptial

• On January 27, 2008 Viva purple service was extended to the Markham Stouffville Hospital serving the commnunity east of McCowan Road.
• The eastward extension will service existing YRT stops with new vivaNow fare validating machines located at Highway 48/Main Street Markham, Wooten Way, and a new viva station on Church Street in front of Markham Stouffville Hospital.
• A new YRT/Viva Terminal, Cornell Terminal is planned for construction in east Markham to accomodate a future extension. Discussions to confirm the site and timing for this new terminal are in progress.

Funding Approved for Cornell VIVA Terminal

The federal government recently announced funding for transit initiatives across the GTA. Included in this funding was $85 Million to expand VIVA across York Region. The new Cornell VIVA Terminal is included in this VIVA expansion and is now expected to be operational by 2009. > Full Story on York.ca

Road Watch

The Town of Markham Road Watch Program is a community-based program that addresses the public's concern over dangerous and aggressive driving practices. The Road Watch Program gives residents an opportunity to report aggressive and unsafe driving to the police through the use of Citizen Report Forms with the objective of making our roads safe for everyone. York Regional Police undertake the administrative and enforcement process with the support and participation of the Town of Markham.

Daytime Parking Permits

In response to complaints about a large number of cars parking on Riverlands Avenue instead of at the hospital, the Town of Markham instituted a Daytime Parking Permit bylaw, which commenced September 1st.  Without a permit, no parking will be allowed in the affected areas. Only residents within the areas were issued permits.

Instead of the problem disappearing, it has now moved north one street to Settlement Park. Residents and CRPA board members alike took this new problem to the Town. On October 17, at the General Committee meeting, the Town approved extending the bylaw to Settlement Park and the affected portions of Country Glen and Walkerville. On October 25th, this extension was approved by Town Council. They also approved leaving the bylaw open, so that extensions can be made if and when new problems arise, without having to go to Council each time. Signs advising residents of this change have already been installed, and the bylaw will take effect Dec.1.
